Gender Based Violence Cases,Early Teenage Pregnancies Hit Kagadi District In Corona Virus Lock Down-Reproductive Health Uganda

Uganda has expressed concern over a surge in gender based violence cases and
early teenage pregnancies in Kagadi district during the corona virus pandemic
lockdown.
This has been
revealed today afternoon during a stakeholders meeting organized by Reproductive
Health Uganda in partnership with KCSON held at Kagadi district headquarters.
According to Mr. Matovu
Craishi of Reproductive Health Uganda, the latest statistics have indicated
that there have been a surge in gender based violence cases, early teenage
pregnancies and conceiving of un planned for pregnancies due to corona virus
pandemic lock down that barred people from accessing Reproductive Health
services like family planning.
The meeting that
involved district stake holders was aimed at strategizing on how to institute a
youth -led team that will be traversing in the various parts of the district
sensitizing members of the public about
family planning, HIV/AIDs management ,Cancer screening and how to
conserve the natural environment .
The District Boss Hon.
Stephen Byaruhanga Mfashingabo has welcomed the activities of Reproductive Health
Uganda into Kagadi district, hence promising an open-door support towards the organization.
He has however cautioned
on the need to observe the SOPs in the due course of expediting their duties
inform of Heath camps and outreaches due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Addressing
participants at same event as the guest participant, Ms.Lilian Ruteraho the
Resident district Commissioner Kagadi concurred with the report presented
before her by RHU officials, stressing that its true cases of gender based
violence have increased within the district.
‘I also do receive gender based violence cases
in my office about 10 a day since this
lockdown started whereby you find a man fights her wife over conjugal practices
which we are trying to work and families leave a better life’says RDC Lillian Ruteraho.
